Isometric drawing

is made up of a series of parallel vertical lines and parallel 30 degree lines.
Isometric drawing Iso-1
It is usually drawn out with the aid of a 30/60 degree set square. Isometric is 30 degrees only.
Isometric drawing Set-square

Sometimes Isometric grid paper is used to aid the drawing.
NOTE: THERE ARE NO HORIZONTAL LINES!

Isometric Crating
Crating is a term used for cutting away from a shape. The easiest shape to draw is a block and this can serve as a guide and will give the overall size of the object to be drawn. Below is an example of a step shape being drawn in a guide block.

Can you accurately draw the shapes below in isometric?

Challenge: Can you draw a 2d development net including all glue tabs of each shape above?

1 Point Perspective
All lines go back to a vanishing point (VP).
Isometric drawing 1-point-1
The vanishing point (VP) can be placed anywhere and it represents your eye level, so if the point is high as in the above animation, you look down on the object. If the VP is low, you will look up underneath the object.
:

2 Point Perspective
Isometric drawing 2-point
The animation above shows 3 blocks being drawn in 2 point perspective. The top block is seen from beneath as the vanishing point (VP) is below it. The middle block is on the VP which means you cannot see the top or bottom. We are looking down on the bottom block as the VP is set high for this object.

Oblique projection is a method of drawing objects in 3 dimensions. It is quite a simple technique compared to isometric or even perspective drawing. However, to draw accurately in oblique projection traditional drawing equipment is needed (see diagram below).
Isometric drawing Obliq1
Isometric drawing Obl2
The technique for drawing a cube in oblique projection is outlined below, stage by stage. To draw it correctly in oblique projection three main rules must be followed:
1. Draw the front or side view of the object.
2. All measurements drawn backwards are half the original measurement.
3. 45 degrees is the angle for all lines drawn backwards

Isometric drawing Obliq3
A. Draw the front view. Remember to use a T-square and 45 degree set square.
Isometric drawing Obliq4
B. Draw 45 degree lines from each corner of the square. The distance of any lines drawn back at 45 degrees should be halved. For example, a cube may have sides of 100mm but they must be drawn 50mm in length. This should mean that the cube will look more realistic and in proportion.

C. Draw 45 degree lines from each corner of the square. The distance of any lines drawn back at 45 degrees should be halved. For example, a cube may have sides of 100mm but they must be drawn 50mm in length. This should mean that the cube will look more realistic and in proportion.

Drawing cylinders in oblique projection is quite simple if the stages outlined below are followed. In comparison with other ways of drawing cylinders (for example, perspective and isometric) using oblique projection is relatively easy.

Isometric drawing Oblique7

STAGE ONE: Draw a vertical and horizontal centre lines to indicate the
centre of a circle, then use a compass to draw the circle itself.
Isometric drawing Oblique8

STAGE TWO: Draw a 45 degree line to match the length on the cylinder. At the end of this line draw vertical and horizontal centre lines.
Remember the general rule for oblique is to half all distances projected backwards. If the cylinder is 100mm in length the distance back must be drawn to 50mm.

STAGE THREE: Draw the second circle with a compass.
Isometric drawing Obliqu10

STAGE FOUR: Draw two 45 degree lines - to join the front and back circles.
Isometric drawing Obliqu11

STAGE FIVE: Go over the outline of the cylinder with a fine pen or sharp pencil. Add shade
